On the 19th of January, Slinky Society are holding an EGM in the U building. The Society is looking for members to fill the roles of PRO, Vice Chair, and Secretary.
The idea for Slinky Society came about in November 2024, from current Chairperson Lu Moreira and their friends, “We got kind of obsessed with the DCU branded slinkies from the merch store and got a bit bullied over them on DCU Confessions”.
Membership officially opened for the society in August last year, as of now they have 28 paid members. It’s described as a “sober society” on the Clubs and Societies website.
“In all honesty it was a bit of an afterthought”, explained Lu, “The slinkies came first. The society was just to spite the people that didn’t like our DCU branded slinkies. In August I thought if this was going to be a feasible thing I needed a proper idea for this”.
Former Student Union President Karl Ormsby suggested the idea of a sober society, and for Lu “seeing as myself, my friends, and most people I know don’t drink, a sober society was really perfect. I was also raised in a home with a lot of addicts, so sobriety is important to me on a personal level”.
The society holds mostly day time events with no alcohol provided. “The events tend to be a bit all over the place but we aim to keep them really unserious”. Lu described, “Our Halloween Murder Mystery was the committee dressed as My Little Ponies, and finding out who killed the Events Manager with a metal slinky. It was peak”.
The positions of PRO and Vice Chair were previously filled, until November of last year when the Vice Chair dropped out “to focus on their studies”. Lu stated that the PRO was out of commission for 90 per cent of last semester.
“I held a mandatory meeting to ensure the committee were still committed, and anyone who didn’t contact me by 12pm that day would have their position revoked. Unfortunately our PRO didn’t contact me, and hasn’t contacted me at all since, so she had her position revoked”. The role of secretary was never filled, due to low numbers at their first AGM. “Now that we’re a bit bigger we’re hoping we’ll be able to fill everything, but to be honest I don’t really mind writing out the weekly newsletter”.
Slinky Society’s next event is a Coffee Meet, held this Friday at Ultimate Coffee beside the St Pats campus. Where they will discuss future event plans and what’s to come during the semester.
